Mental Health Awareness Month: Why it matters and how mental health counseling can help
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It's been observed since 1949, and while a lot has changed in how we talk about mental health, the need for accessible mental health counseling hasn't.
There's still a gap between how many people struggle and how many feel comfortable asking for help. That gap is what this month is really about.
Why awareness still matters
Mental health affects everything from how we sleep, how we work, how we show up for the people we care about. Yet despite its impact, it often remains one of the most difficult topics to discuss openly, especially in workplaces and public settings.
Awareness matters because it helps normalize these conversations and creates space for people to seek support without fear or shame. When someone hears a coworker speak openly about therapy, it can make reaching out for help feel more possible. Small shifts in openness and understanding can have an impact.
What this month actually looks like
For some people, Mental Health Awareness Month means learning about anxiety or burnout for the first time and recognizing themselves in it. For others, it's the nudge to finally make an appointment they've been putting off. For others still, it's just a reminder to check in on someone they've been meaning to reach out to.
Small things that actually help
You don't need a plan or a program to support your mental health. Rest matters. So does having even one or two people you can be honest with. Or noticing when you've been running on empty and giving yourself permission to slow down.
Sometimes the most helpful step is connecting with a mental health counselor outside your immediate circle. A counselor isn't there because something is seriously wrong, they're there because it helps to have a space where you can think out loud.
